"Hobby" Breeder of Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers? Rule Number 1: Do not do a google search for Wheatens. You will end up with a long list of people who breed Wheatens which includes puppy mills and backyard breeders. They have a ready supply of pups and are breeding to make money. Not a good sign!!!! Rule Number 2: Do not look in the newspaper or dog magazine for a Wheaten pup. Reputable "Hobby" Breeders do not need to place an ad in the paper/magazine to place their pups. Rule Number 3: While the AKC (American Kennel Club) does list available litters on their website, those listings are available to anyone who registers a litter with the AKC and pays an additional fee. Again, not a wise place to locate a pup! Rule Number 4: Pet stores do not carry pups from Reputable "Hobby" Breeders. When you purchase a pup from a Pet store you are not "rescuing" a pup, you are putting money directly back into the pocket of the puppy millers who breed their dogs every season regardless of temperament or recommended health tests. Puppy mill dogs live in small cages with little to no human interaction. When their breeding "career" comes to an end, in many instances, so do their lives. So, given the information above, where do you go to find a well-bred, well-socialized Wheaten pup? To the parent club for the breed, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of America's website! |
